Five Things You HAVE to Eat When You Visit Rough Creek Lodge and Resort
When it comes to Rough Creek Lodge and Resort, there is no shortage of fun things to do. From horseback riding up to Gun Mountain to playing a round of golf at the state-of-the-art Top Tracer Range, there are plenty of activities to check off your vacation bucket list. There are many fun and unique opportunities, but, if you ask us, there is nothing better than eating gourmet food until our hearts are content.
Well, at Rough Creek, you can do that too. Depending on the package you select, the breakfast buffet and three-course gourmet dinner are included- because we want your getaway to be so care-free you don’t even have to decide how much to eat. And the food isn’t just an after-thought. The menus change daily and are cooked with intention to perfection. So, even compared to the exquisite 11,000-acre property and 83 onsite activities, it still ranks at the top of our list. Chef Gerard Thompson, here’s looking at you.
Whether you’re visiting for business, pleasure, or maybe even a little bit of both, you can rest assured that your meals will be exactly what you need to refuel for the next day, appease your gourmet pallet and savor the moment while taking in the lakeside views in good company. After eating many, many delicious meals by the adorned and renowned Texas chef, we have narrowed down our list of favorites to just five of his most expertly crafted dishes. Take it from us, when you stay at Rough Creek Lodge and Resort, you’re going to want to try these…
Grilled Texas Quail
Need we say more? The name of this starter alone boasts an out-of-this-world gastronomical experience, but just wait until you taste it. Chef Gerard Thompson is known at Rough Creek and throughout Texas for his unwavering ability to create something appealing (hence his Wine Spectator Award of Excellence), and this is no exception. Brilliantly full of flavor and perfectly paired with artisan farrow, the Quail brings the taste of Texas into your Rough Creek experience. Life on the ranch never sounded so good.
Raisin Pecan Bread
The menu changes daily based on the chef’s creativity and his supply, but one thing that never changes is the Raisin Pecan Bread… and it is something you’re going to want to hold on to. Whoever thought bread would be the least exciting part of a three-course gourmet meal never tasted this. It may as well have fallen from the heavens.
House-Pulled Mozzarella and Heirloom Tomatoes
Cheese lovers, this one’s for you. In case you missed it the first time, allow us to reiterate. The mozzarella is house-pulled. Oh yes, that means it is made in house. But don’t be fooled, that isn’t because it’s easy. Pulling mozzarella is actually quite the process. That doesn’t stop Chef Gerard Thompson. From heating the curds and working them together to stretching them until they’re smooth enough to form into balls, the work that goes into pulling the mozzarella is well worth it. Picked fresh, the heirloom tomatoes are the best possible compliment to the mozzarella flavor, and the taste is sure to bring you right to the cliffs of Cinque Terre for a truly unique and cultured experience. When in Rome!
It’s no surprise that the filet is one of Rough Creek Lodge and Resort’s premier offerings, but, like most things on the ranch, it is far from ordinary. Thanks to the chef’s expertise, this entrée is cooked to perfection and paired with broccolini florets and potato mash. But the gourmet delight doesn’t end there. Rough Creek Lodge and Resort actually smokes and cures their own meets in-house, so, not only is the filet exquisitely fresh, but its flavor is new, innovative, and unparalleled. Thinking this calls for a great glass of wine to go with it? You’re right. Thanks to Rough Creek’s on-site sommelier, you’ll be expertly advised on which of the 150 bottles you should choose (hint: There is no wrong choice).
Is the rich savor of the main course giving you a sweet tooth? Fear not. Rough Creek Lodge and Resort has got you covered with their artisan selection of delightful desserts. At the very top of that list is the banana pudding. Whether you saved room or not, the banana pudding’s presentation alone begs you to indulge. One bite just isn’t enough because it tastes even better than it looks.
If you’re not still full from dinner, Rough Creek Lodge and Resort’s breakfast buffet will leave an impression, too. Located in the main dining room, it is also included as part of the lodge rate and is open for all to come and enjoy. Oh, and did we mention that the lunch selection is available in the dining room AND by the pool? That’s what we call a win-win!
Well, there you have it! The creme de la creme, the apple of the chef’s eye, and the cherry on top of a truly unforgettable experience at Rough Creek Lodge and Resort. We know we talk a big game, but don’t just take our word for it. Whether you book a stay at the lodge, cabins, or even the residences, Chef Gerard’s masterpieces are sure to be the pinnacle of every Rough Creek stay.
